Jack Del Rio “Leading Candidate” To Be Pat Shurmur’s DC With Giants

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that former Raiders HC Jack Del Rio is a leading candidate to become Pat Shurmur’s defensive coordinator with the Giants.

According to Mortensen, Del Rio has been prominent on Shurmur’s list of defensive candidates and is open to joining the Giants.

Del Rio is still scheduled to be paid a salary of $6 million per year from the Raiders over the next three years and any salary from the Giants would be offset against his Oakland contract.

Some thought the Giants hiring Shurmur could be a good sign for DC Steve Spagnuolo remaining in New York. However, it sounds like Shurmur’s focus is on Del Rio.

Del Rio, 54, began his head coaching career with the Jaguars from 2003-2011 and led them to a regular season record of 68-71 (48.9 percent) and franchise to two playoff appearances.

After his time in Jacksonville, the Broncos signed him to become their defensive coordinator from 2012-2014 and helped create one of the strongest defenses in the NFL during that time.

The Raiders brought him in as their head coach in 2015 only to fire him a few weeks and bring back Jon Gruden.

During his three years as the Raiders head coach, Del Rio led them to a record of 25-23 (52.1 percent) and one playoff appearance.

We’ll have more regarding Del Rio and the Giants as the news is available.
