Jaguars Bench Blake Bortles For Cody Kessler

The Jacksonville Jaguars have benched QB Blake Bortles during Sunday’s game and have replaced him with QB Cody Kessler.

Interestingly enough, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported earlier in the day that the Jaguars are not considering a trade for a quarterback, despite recent speculation they could be willing to bring in competition for Bortles.

However, it’s clear that they aren’t all-in on Bortles as their starter.

Bortles, 26, was taken with the No. 3 overall pick by the Jaguars back in 2014. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $20,654,796 rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $3,236,565 for the 2017 season.

The Jaguars picked up his fifth-year option and will run them around $19,053,000 for the 2018 season, but elected to sign him to a three-year, $54 million contract worth up to $66.5 million with incentives back in February.

Entering today’s game, Bortles had appeared in six games for the Jaguars and thrown for 1,674 yards while completing 61.2 percent of his passes to go along with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has also rushed for 188 yards and one touchdown.
