Jaguars Decline DE Dante Fowler’s Fifth-Year Option

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, the Jaguars have declined DE Dante Fowler Jr‘s fifth-year option.

The fifth-year option would have cost Jacksonville $14,200,000 for the 2019 season.

Here’s a statement from Tom Coughlin regarding the move:

Fowler, 23, Is a former No. 3 overall pick by the Jaguars out of Florida in the 2015 NFL Draft. He is entering the final year of his four-year, $23.5 million fully guaranteed contract and is set to earn a base salary of $3,638,214 for the 2018 season.

In 2017, Fowler appeared in all 16 games for the Jaguars and recorded 21 total tackles, eight sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and scored one defensive touchdown. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 93 overall edge defender out of 106 qualifying players.
