Jaguars Expected To Undergo “Sweeping Changes” In 2019

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that “sweeping changes are inevitable” for the Jaguars next year and it’s possible that they could extend to the coaching staff and front office.

After speaking with multiple NFL salary cap executives, La Canfora says that the Jaguars will likely have to “gut” their roster to reposition themselves for the future.

As of now, Jacksonville is currently projected to be $25-$30 million over the cap in 2019.

Sources around the league tell La Canfora that there’s “no chance” they’ll be able to trade QB Blake Bortles and it’s likely that the Jaguars will need to move from some of their notable defensive linemen.

Jaguars defensive linemen Calais Campbell, Marcell Dareus and Malik Jackson are set to count $42M against the cap in 2019.

“There is no way to keep that team together if you wanted to,” a separate NFL cap manager tells La Canfora. “You are going to have to extend (linebacker) Myles Jack and (end) Yannick Ngakoue, and I guarantee you (Jalen) Ramsey is going to want to get paid, too. They are going to have to shed a lot of veteran contracts. I don’t see any way around it.”

Interestingly enough, La Canfora says that questions remain about whether Tom Coughlin will remain in place as team president. La Canfora adds that one option for Coughlin could be a return to coaching, as this has been a terrible year for the team, despite high expectations.

Given that they don’t have a quarterback of the future in place, concerns about a potential move, and a bad cap situation, La Canfora doesn’t think the Jaguars’ job would be appealing to candidates if it were to be available.

We’ll have more regarding changes for the Jaguars as the news is available.
