Jaguars LT Branden Albert Will Report For Start Of Minicamp Next Week

On Friday, Jaguars HC Doug Marrone told reporters that LT Branden Albert informed him that he plans to report to the team for the start of mandatory minicamp next week, per Mike Kaye.

Marrone added that he has no idea what shape Albert will be in upon joining the team, so he can’t project his level of participation in mandatory minicamp, per Hays Carlyon.

Albert has been away from the team and reportedly seeking a new contract that would pay him closer to the market value for his position.

Jason Cole of B/R previously reported that Albert is looking for a similar contract to the ones signed by Russell Okung and Andrew Whitworth this offseason.

However, Cole adds that it doesn’t sound like Jacksonville is inclined to do anything about his contract.

The Rams give Whitworth a three-year, $36 million contract ($12M per year) with $15 million guaranteed this past March while Okung secured a four-year, $53 million contract ($13.25M per year) with $25 million guaranteed from the Chargers.

Offensive linemen did really well this offseason, so I’m sure Albert believes he should be compensated at a similar level. Unfortunately, all indications have been that the Jaguars aren’t willing to negotiate with Albert and used a second-round pick on Cam Robinson so they have options moving forward.

Jacksonville agreed to send a 2018 seventh-round pick to the Dolphins in return for Albert and the two teams also completed a separate trade for TE Julius Thomas soon after.

Albert, 32, is a former first-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2008. He spent six years in Kansas City before signing a five-year, $46 million contract with $25 million guaranteed with the Dolphins back in 2014.

Albert currently has two years remaining on his contract and stands to make base salaries of $8.875 million and $9.575 million during this time.

In 2016, Albert appeared in 12 games and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 65 offensive tackle out of 78 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Albert and the Jaguars as the news is available.
