Daryl Smith Leaves Visit With The Rams Without A Contract

Update:

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that free agent LB Daryl Smith completed his visit with the Rams and “no deal appears imminent.

Thomas adds that Smith may take “several visits” before deciding on anything.

As of now, we’re not sure who he’ll be visiting with. The Rams were his first reported visit and the Jaguars do not appear to be an option at this point in time.

St Louis could use some help at outside linebacker, and Smith represents one of the best available options. It’s doubtful that he’ll command much in terms of salary at this point in free agency, so he could end up being a great bargain for someone.

We have him listed as the No. 7 best available player in our recently updated Top 50 Free Agents list.

Update:

Adam Schefter reports that free agent LB Daryl Smith will be visiting with the Rams on Monday.

This will be Smith’s first reported visit despite the fact that we’re nearly a month into free agency. A recent report suggested that the Jaguars are unlikely re-sign Smith, who’s coming off of a groin injury last season.

Smith, 31, was rated as the No. 2 outside linebacker just two seasons ago by Pro Football Focus. When healthy, he’s a very effective player, so we’ll have to see if anything comes from this visit.

The market for free agent LB Daryl Smith has limited to say the least. Smith, 31, suffered a groin injury last season, but was a very solid player for the Jaguars the past few seasons.

New Jaguars GM David Caldwell isn’t ready to rule out possibly re-signing Smith.

If he’s interested, we would definitely talk to his agent and see where it goes,” Caldwell said. “We wouldn’t close the door on him at all.

The Jaguars have had a very quiet offseason thus far and could use some help at linebacker, so this seems like a reasonable option.
