Jaguars Release DE Jeremy Mincey

In a somewhat surprising move, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced the release of DE Jeremy Mincey on Friday.

Mincey, 30, signed a four-year contract worth $20 million that included $9 million guaranteed back in 2012, so he was just in year two of that deal. He had base salaries of $4.475 million and $4.9 million remaining on his contract.

With the release of Mincey, the Jaguars will free up $2.5 million in cap space this season and another $4.925 million next year.

In 2011, Mincey tallied eight sacks before becoming an unrestricted free agent. He returned to Jacksonville, but has yet to put together the same kind of production. Last year he produced just three sacks in 16 games and has just two sacks this season. On top of that, he as inactive for team’s Weeks 12 and 13 games after violating team rules.

We’ll have to see if he’s claimed off of waivers in the coming days.
