Jaguars Sign Fifth-Round Pick LB Telvin Smith

Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union reports that the Jaguars signed fifth-round pick LB Telvin Smith.

Jacksonville now has five of their nine draft picks under contract, but they could very easily have most, if not all, of them signed by this weekend.

Smith’s four-year contract is worth an estimated $2,431,052 and includes a signing bonus of $211,052, according to OverTheCap.com.

Smith displayed tremendous athleticism during his time at Florida State.  He stands only 6’3 218 pounds however, making him undersized for the linebacker position.

Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley had an opportunity to coach Smith during the 2014 Senior Bowl.  Smith is regarded as a vocal leader, and it is likely that Bradley took note of this quality.  Jacksonville’s front office has prioritized adding high-character players with leadership qualities.

Smith will likely battle LB Geno Hayes and free agent acquisition LB Dekoda Watson for playing time at the weakside linebacker position.

In four years at Florida State, Smith recorded 214 total tackles, seven sacks and four interceptions.
