The Jacksonville Jaguars announced Tuesday that they’ve signed rookie S Elijah Shumate to future/reserve contract.
The Jaguars have now signed nine players to futures deals since their season ended including:
- TE E.J. Bibbs (NFLTR)
- DB Doran Grant
- G Nila Kasitati
- LB Raphael Kirby
- TE Gannon Sinclair
- OT Arturo Uzdavinis
- DT Louis Nix
- WR Jamal Robinson
- S Elijah Shumate
Future/reserve contracts are essentially an opportunity for players compete for a roster spot in offseason workouts and during training camp.
Shumate, 22, wound up signing on with the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame back in May. He was in the first year of his three-year, $1.62 million rookie contract and set to make a base salary of $450,000 for the 2016 season when the Bucs waived him with an injury designation.
Shumate later cleared waivers and reverted to their injured reserve list before being cut loose with an injury settlement.
During his college career, Shumate recorded 168 tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery, two interceptions and 10 pass defenses.
