Jaguars Will Consider A Contract Extension For WR Allen Hurns In Coming Months

Jaguars GM David Caldwell told reporters at the owners meeting that they will consider a potential contract extension for WR Allen Hurns in the weeks leading up to the draft, per Ryan O’Halloran.

  • Caldwell added that if they were to get an agreement done with Hurns, it would likely be before the start of the regular season.

Getting Hurns under contract long-term would make sense, given how effective he has been for them since entering the league a few years ago. However, it could end up being very costly if they wait until he’s in position to be an unrestricted free agent after 2017.

Hurns, 24, signed on with the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent out of Miami back in 2014. He’s managed to make the 53-man roster each year and is entering the final year of his three-year, $1.535 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $600,000 for the 2016 season.

Hurns is in line to be a restricted free agent in 2017.

Last year, Hurns appeared in 15 games for the Jaguars and recorded 64 receptions for 1,031 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 18 receiver out of 121 qualifying players.
