Jaguars Won’t Release TE Marcedes Lewis, Teams Have Shown Interest In Trading For Him

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Jaguars have no plans to release veteran TE Marcedes Lewis, even after they signed Julius Thomas to a massive contract extension.

According to Rapoport, there’s a chance that NFL teams could reach out to Jacksonville regarding a potential trade for Lewis.

Lewis, 30, is in the final year of his five-year, $35 million contract that included $17 million guaranteed. He stands to make $6.65 million for the 2015 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Lewis would free up $6,8 million in available cap space while creating $1.4 million in dead money. It’s worth mentioning that trading him would create the same amount of cap relief.

Last year, Lewis appeared in eight games and caught 18 passes for 206 yards receiving and two touchdowns for the Jaguars. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 48 tight end out of 67 qualifying players.
