On Thursday, veteran DE Jared Allen announced that he’s retiring from the NFL vi his Twitter account after 12 years.

Allen also released a statement regarding his decision to retire after 12 years in the NFL.

I want to take this time to thank my family, friends fans, and teammates who have given their continued support throughout my 12 year career. It’s been a great ride for me, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the memories. It is with a great deal of thought and consideration, that I have decided that I will not return to football next year. I want to thank the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and the Kansas City Chiefs organizations, who provided me with an opportunity to live out my dream and to be a part of their wonderful communities. Thanks for the life long memories.

Allen, 33, had two years remaining on his four-year, $32 million contract that included $15.5 million guaranteed. He was set to make a base salary of $8.5 million for the 2016 season.

Allen is a former fourth-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2004. After four years in Kansas City, he was traded to the Vikings where he played another six seasons. He would later sign on with the Bears before being sent to the Panthers in September.

Over the course of his 12-year NFL career, Allen totaled 498 tackles, 136 sacks, 32 forced fumbles, 19 recoveries, six interceptions and two defensive touchdowns.
