Jarvis Landry Plans To Shut Down Negotiations With Dolphins If No Deal By Week 1

Damarius Bilbo, the agent for Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry, tells Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that they will not negotiate a new contract with Miami once the regular season is underway.

However, they’re open to discussing a contract with the team in the coming months and Bilbo says his client has no plans to hold out of training or the regular season for a new contract.

The ball is still in their court; we are happy to go into a fourth year healthy and eager to put another year in the books,” Bilbo said. “Why get mad over something that he signed as a four-year deal? It is what it is. There will be no ill will. He has never considered a holdout. He would never consider not getting better at football.

In regards to the decision to end talks at the start of the season, Bilbo explained that they don’t want contract talks to be a distraction for either party.

We want to respect the Dolphins,” Bilbo said. “When the season kicks off, we want to continue to respect that. We don’t want every game to be about a new contract. This is not a tactic; that is not an approach. This is who Jarvis is and what he wants out of the upcoming season.

Landry is in line for a large contract extension at some point over the next year or so, as he’s developed into one of the best young receivers in the NFL, and Jackson says it wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone if he ends up securing a deal that would make him one of the top-10 or 12 highest paid receivers in the game.

Landry, 24, is a former second-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2014. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $3.5 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $893,852 for the 2017 season.

In 2016, Landry appeared in all 16 games for the Dolphins and caught 94 passes for 1,136 yards receiving and four touchdowns. He also contributed 163 kick return yards. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 9 receiver out of 115 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding a new deal for Landry as the news is available.
