Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, reports that Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul would show up before Week 1’s game if the team agreed to pay him whether or not ends up on the non-football injury list.
There has been talk that JPP could be headed for the NFI list if he were to sign his franchise tender. Doing so would cost Pierre-Paul for the first six weeks of the season and the Giants could withhold his salary during this time.
This is why Pierre-Paul has yet to sign his franchise tender and could wait to do so until there’s some sort of agreement regarding his salary.
ESPN’s Ed Werder reported yesterday that Pierre-Paul won’t sign his franchise tender until he can pass a physical that would prevent the team from placing him on the non-football injury list.
Earlier in the week, Jordan Raanan of NJ.com reported that the Giants fully intend to have Pierre-Paul on their roster at the start of the regular season, so we’ll have to see if the two sides are able to find some sort agreement that will get JPP to attend training camp.
Pierre-Paul, 26, played out his five-year, $20.05 million rookie contract that included $11,629,807 million guaranteed. The Giants wound up using their franchise tag on Pierre-Paul back in early March, which will pay him a fully guaranteed salary of $14.813 million for the 2015 season.
In 2014, Pierre-Paul recorded 77 tackles, 12.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and a recovery over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 defensive end in a 4-3 system out of 59 qualifying players.
