Jay Cutler Says He’s “Probably” Done Playing Football

Free agent QB Jay Cutler mentioned in a clip for his wife’s reality TV show that he’s “probably” done with his NFL career.

“I mean, I can’t say 100. Probably,” Cutler said, via Pro Football Talk.

Cutler was asked when he’ll know for sure if he’s going to return and his response was: “September.”

Kristin Cavallari, Cutler’s wife, clearly wants his football playing days to be behind him.

“You have to realize how many sacrifices I have made over the eight football seasons we’ve been together,” she said. “This is my turn.”

Back in April, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that Cutler is expected to retire from the NFL and could be hired by FOX as a broadcast analyst.

There hasn’t been any reported interest in Cutler this offseason, despite being one of the best available quarterbacks, so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

After the season, Cutler made it clear that he wasn’t interested in a backup quarterback role, which made a return for the 2018 season unlikely.

Cutler, 34, is a former first-round pick of the Broncos back in 2006. He spent three years in Denver before he was traded to the Bears in 2009. He was in the fourth year of his seven-year, $126.7 million contract that included $54 million guaranteed when the Bears cut him loose at the start of the 2017 league year.

After finding little interest as a free agent, Cutler decided to retire and accepted a job with FOX Sports as a broadcaster. However, the Dolphins convinced him to come out of retirement after Ryan Tannehill went down with a knee injury during training camp.

In 2017, Cutler appeared in 14 games and completed 2,666 yards while completing 62 percent of his passes to go along with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 35 quarterback out of 39 qualifying players.
