Update Regarding Cowboys DE DeMarcus Ware Possibly Being On The Chopping Block

Update:

Ian Rapoport reports that there is no communication between the Cowboys and DE DeMarcus Ware regarding his status with the team.

  • Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told SportsCenter that there is chance that Ware could be released.

As things stand right now, the Cowboys have yet to ask Ware to take a pay cut, according to Rapoport.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said there’s no guarantee that DE DeMarcus Ware will be back with the team next season.

“There’s no question when you are where we are on the cap, even though we’ve had some new cap space added, and you have a defensive player that’s your highest paid defensive player, and he hasn’t been on the field much the last two years, that has to be considered,” Jones said, via The Dallas Morning News. “You can’t have it all.”

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones was discussing the team’s current cap situation last week when he mentioned that “DeMarcus had a hell of a career, but when we’re in the cap situation that we’re in and obviously counting as much as he is obviously you have to look at it along with several others.

Dallas is projected to be about $20 million over the salary cap as of now, so tough decisions will clearly need to be made in the coming weeks.

Ware, 31, has been rumored to be on the chopping block for a few months now. He has a cap figure close to $16 million for the 2014 season and a base salary of $12.75 million. Should the Cowboys elect to release Ware outright, they would gain $7.432 million in cap space, which would go a long way towards getting them cap compliant.

We’ll have more regarding the Cowboys and Ware as the news is available.
