Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters after Sunday night’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that although the team’s season was over, HC Jason Garrett’s job is safe.
Since taking the head coaching job mid-season in 2010, Garrett has never had a winning season and has finished with an 8-8 record for the third straight year. Overall, Garrett’s record is at least on the plus size as he’s won 29-27 (.517), but the expectations have increased considerably in recent years and yet the team has failed to make the postseason.
The fanbase has been calling for a change at head coach for awhile now and yet Jones has offered Garrett numerous votes of confidence. It appears as though he likes what Garrett brings to the team’s offense overall and believes the team is actually making progress to some degree.
As for DC Monte Kiffin, Jones didn’t offer the same level of support. Jones did say that Kiffin never mentioned the possibility of retiring this offseason.
Given how bad the Cowboys defensive unit has been, it seems likely that changes will be made in the coming weeks.
There is still a chance that Garrett could be fired, so we’ll have more as the news is available.
