Jerry Jones: Morris Claiborne Done Enough To Justify Picking Up His 5th-Year Option

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made a somewhat surprising comment on Tuesday regarding former first-round pick CB Morris Claiborne.

Jones that Claiborne has done enough for the Cowboys to justify them picking up his fifth-year option, per Brandon George.

It’s hard to imagine Dallas seriously considering Claiborne’s fifth-year option given how poorly he’s played, and the fact that they need to lock up WR Dez Bryant to a massive long-term extension, a well as make a decision regarding RB DeMarco Murray.

Cap space is tight in Dallas, so paying Claiborne the average salary of the top-10 salaries for cornerbacks seems way out of the discussion. It’s worth mentioning that even if the Cowboys surprisingly do pick up his option, it’s not guaranteed and they could always release him or work on a contract extension.

Claiborne, 24, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $2,607,887 for the 2015 season.

His year came to an end after he suffered a knee injury and was later placed on season-ending injured reserve.

In 2014, Claiborne record seven tackles, one interception and two pass defenses over the course of four games.
