Jerry Jones: No Reason To Accelerate Contract Talks With WR Dez Bryant

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones mentioned in a Friday interview with 105.3 The Fan that he doesn’t see any reason to accelerate contract talks with WR Dez Bryant.

“I don’t talk about these contracts that are in this particular stage, which is a negotiation, whether it be preliminary or whether it be at some advanced stage in the negotiation, so let’s just say we’re working towards those kinds of things,” Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. “We have Dez for several more years, as it would be under contract as well as with the league-type structure that’s available to us with the franchise [tag] and the transition [tag] and all that. It’s an important thing.

“We think Dez has made a lot of progress, but it’s something that is going to be very impactful on our team, so it’s just not necessary to move at any faster rate than we’re moving.”

This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise given that they locked up LT Tyron Smith a few weeks ago, which basically prevents them from handing out another market contract.

Bryant, 25, is set to become an unrestricted free agent following the season and has emerged as one of the best receivers in the game today. He stands to make just $1.78 million for the 2014 season.

It wouldn’t be shocking to see Bryant end up with a contract that pays him $10 million annually, which could be the reason for the Cowboys to wait as they should have more cap space to work with next year.

In 2013, Bryant hauled in 93 receptions for 1233 yards to go along with a career-high 13 touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has Bryant rated as the No. 22 wide receiver in the league.

We have Bryant listed as the No. 4 player in our Top 25 – 2015 Free Agents list.
