Jerry Jones Trying To Slow Down Contract Extension For Roger Goodell

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen are reporting Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has “slowed down, if not impeded” contract negotiations involving an extension for commissioner Roger Goodell.

“If it weren’t for Jerry’s involvement, Goodell’s extension could be done,” Schefter said.

According to ESPN, Jones is now being singled out by some owners and league executives as the reason Goodell does not have the contract extension that many expected to be in place before this season kicked off.

League sources tell ESPN that Goodell was informed that Jones was added to the NFL’s compensation committee process as the commissioner was deciding on punishment for Elliott.

There’s a compensation committee conference call scheduled for Wednesday and the topic of Goodell’s contract is expected to be discussed.

According to the report, some owners believe a contract extension is imminent, but a source close to the situation tells ESPN that “there’s no way that happens right now.”

It’s interesting to see hear that Jones is taking an active role to possible table an extension for the commissioner after RB Ezekiel Elliott was recently suspended six games.

Last month, Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal reported that the NFL and Goodell were “close” to a five-year extension.

Adam Schefter later reported that talks between the NFL and Goodell regarding a new deal have not progressed as some thought. However, Schefter adds that a deal is still likely to get done, but there are some issues to work out.

A source told Schefter that Falcons owner Arthur Blank has had ongoing discussions about a new contract for Goodell since the league meetings in May. Although Schefter adds that there are some who feel that the sides were closer to a deal earlier this month than they are today.

This new deal would keep Goodell in place through the 2024 season and extend his run to 19 years as league commissioner.

Goodell has overseen the league during the most prosperous stretch in league history, which has led to record revenues for teams and a team-friendly CBA.Goodell, 58, took over for Paul Tagliabue in 2006. His original five-year contract was extended in 2009, and then again in 2012.
