Jets CB Darrelle Revis: “My Body’s Breaking Down”

Jets CB Darrelle Revis admitted that years of matching up with opposing team’s best receivers have taken a toll on his body.

“My body’s breaking down,” Revis told Kimberly A. Martin of Newsday.

Revis explained that while his body is breaking down to some degree, he can still play in the NFL.

“Yeah, I am. I mean, not in a bad way. I can still play,” Revis said, smiling. “It’s just, I’m breaking down. I’m 31. How many corners are 31 right now in the league? The league’s getting younger. I know [Vikings cornerback Terence] Newman’s still playing [at 38], which is impressive. But I don’t know how he’s doing it.

Revis added that retirement isn’t a consideration for him right now and his focus remains on taking care of his body and helping the Jets win games.

“I’m not thinking about retirement at this moment,” said Revi. “I’ve just got to continue to take care of my body. Some of the past injuries, they linger. They linger.”

Revis, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Jets back in 2007. He’s currently in the second year of his five-year, $70 million contract that includes $39 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $17 million (2016), $13 million (2017), and $10 million (2018-2019) over the remainder of the contract.

According to OverTheCap.com, Revis still has $6 million of his 2017 salary guaranteed, which means releasing would free up $7,333,333 in available cap space while creating $8 million in dead money. However, those figures could improve to $9 million in available cap space while creating $6,333,333 in dead money if he was designated as a post-June 1 release.

This season, Revis has appeared in six games for the Jets and recorded 20 tackles, no interceptions and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 83 cornerback out of 116 qualifying players.
