Jets Have “Cooled” On Paxton Lynch, Unlikely To Be Their Pick At No. 20?

Rich Cimini of ESPN is hearing that the Jets have “cooled” on Memphis QB Paxton Lynch, and does believe he’ll be an option for New York at No. 20 overall.

According to Cimini, some teams have concerns about Lynch’s maturity and ability to handle the cerebral nature of the quarterback position.

This comes after the news that Lynch scored 18 on the Wonderlic intelligence test, which is considered below average for a quarterback.

“Processing information and reading defenses could take a while,” said an AFC personnel director tells Cimini. “He’s not a plug-and-play player.”

Some have wondered about the Jets taking another developmental quarterback, given that they have already have Geno Smith and Bryce Petty on their roster.

Instead, Cimini suggests Penn State’s Christian Hackenberg as a Day-2 target who could make more sense for the Jets.

Earlier in the day, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that the Jets could actually be targeting a receiver in round one and named TCU‘s Josh Doctson and Norte Dame‘s Will Fuller as two names worth watching for them.

Even if the Jets aren’t crazy about Lynch, he represents the real wildcard in this year’s draft and is widely considered to be the third best quarterback in the 2016 class.

The Browns, Bills and Saints have all come up as potential options for Lynch in recent weeks. However, should he still be on the board towards the end of round one, some have mentioned that the Broncos could consider a move up.

During his three years at Memphis, Lynch threw for 8,865 yards while completing 62.9 percent of his passes to go along with 59 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He also contributed 687 yards rushing and 17 rushing touchdowns during this time.

For what it’s worth, we have the Browns taking Lynch in a trade back with the Dolphins in our recently updated 2016 NFL Mock Draft.
