Jets Tried To Trade WR Stephen Hill This Summer

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Jets made an attempt to trade former second-round pick WR Stephen Hill this summer, but couldn’t find any interest.

Schefter wonders whether things could change in the coming days as teams continue to trim their respective rosters.

Rich Cimini of ESPN New York writes that former Jets second-round pick WR Stephen Hill could be in his final days with the teams.

According to Cimini, the fact that Hill is set to play in the Jets’ preseason finale is a “clear indication his roster spot is in jeopardy.”

Cimini believes the Jets best option with Hill at this point in his career would be to put him on the trading block and see what they could get in return for him.

An AFC personnel executive seems to think there would be at least marginal interest in Hill if he was available.

“I think there would be some interest,” said the executive. “There aren’t a lot of free-agent wide receivers out there, so it’s supply and demand.”

Cimini also passes along an interesting note regarding how much the Jets liked Hill during the 2012 draft.

“They wound up picking him 43rd overall, after trading up, but [Hill] was rated so highly on their draft board that he would’ve been a consideration with the 16th pick if Quinton Coples wasn’t available,” Cimini writes.

Hill still has two years remaining on his contract with reasonable base salaries of $718,394 and $932,590 coming his way during this time, but it’s hard to say if anyone would be willing to part with draft compensation when so many receivers will be available.

Last year, Hill appeared in 12 games and caught 24 passes for 342 yards receiving and a touchdown.
