Jets Don’t Want To Bring Back C Nick Mangold At Current Salary, Have Yet To Discuss Pay Cut

A team source tells Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that the Jets do not want to bring back veteran C Nick Mangold at his current salary.

Although, Mehta says that the Jets have not approached Mangold yet about a possible pay cut, as those talks are likely to take place at the Scouting Combine in the coming weeks.

Mangold has said that he plans on returning for the 2017 season and continuing his NFL career. However, some have wondered if the Jets would be better off taking the cap savings from releasing him and re-signing restricted free agent Wesley Johnson, who filled in for Mangold last season.

Mangold, 32, is a former first-round pick of the Jets back in 2006. He’s currently in the seventh year of his eight-year, $57.4 million contract that included $25 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $5.6 million and $6.075 million over the next two years.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing will free up $9,075,000 in available cap space while creating no dead money.

In 2016, Mangold appeared in eight games for the Jets and is rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 25 center out of 38 qualifying players.
