Report: Jets Expected To Fire GM John Idzik

Update:

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Jets are likely to fire GM John Idzik in the coming days after two years with the team.

According to Mortensen, Rex Ryan’s future with the team could come down to who they hire as their next general manager.

Owner Woody Johnson reportedly “remains fond” of Ryan, but he would prefer their next general manager to ultimately make that call.

Sources tell Mortensen that Ryan could ask Johnson for a resolution regarding his status sooner than later.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports has spoken to league sources who all believe the Jets will be firing HC Rex Ryan and GM John Idzik in the near future.

Ian Rapoport adds that Ryan believes he’s being fired so strongly that he has been joking around with staffers about it in recent days. According to Rapoport, an announcement could come as soon as tonight.

La Canfora points out that consultant Charley Casserly is reportedly “very high” on Cardinals DC Todd Bowles with UCLA HC Jim Mora Jr viewed as a “very strong candidate” within the Jets.

As for potential GM candidates, La Canfora mentions that Texans scouting director Mike Maccagnan has ties to Casserly, so this could be something to watch.

The Jets are expected to interview Vikings assistant GM George Paton, Browns assistant GM Morocco Brown, Houston director of pro personnel Brian Gaine among others in the coming weeks.

Rapoport reports that the Jets are expected to target a general manager with more of a personnel background than a financial specialist.

According to Rapoport, an issue for the Jets could be the fact that their quarterback situation including inheriting Geno Smith, as some believe this could scare off potential candidates.

Rapoport spoke to one GM candidate who mentioned that he “has expressed some nervousness” about the situation.

We’ll have more regarding the Jets as the news is available.
