Jets G Willie Colon Expected To Back Before Training Camp, Could Consider FA Options

Jets HC Rex Ryan told last week that veteran G Willie Colon could be out “a while” following arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

However, Rich Cimini of ESPN New York writes that Colon is expected to be back before the start of training camp and doesn’t see any reason for the team to panic at this point in time.

  • Cimini adds that the Jets offensive line depth could actually be a concern given that their current backup options have had limited experience.
  • Cimini believes the Jets would be wise to sign some veteran insurance in the coming weeks.

Colon, 31, was re-signed in March to a one-year deal for $2 million after starting all 16 games in his first season with the Jets in 2013.

The Jets allowed 47 sacks last season, more than all but five teams.  Much of this could be attributed to starting a rookie quarterback in Geno Smith, but it is clear that the unit could use some work.

Travelle Wharton happens to be our highest rated free agent,  but he is reportedly considering retirement, and there is some doubt that he would consider signing on with a new team.

Beyond him, veteran options such as Uche NwaneriRichie Incognito and Daryn Colledge.

We have all of these players in our recent updated Top 50 – Best Available Free Agents list.
