Jets Interested In Re-Signing DL Sheldon Richardson

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets are interested in re-signing DL Sheldon Richardson as a free agent during the offseason.

According to Mehta, Richardson would “love” to return to New York and play for the Jets again, even though they traded him to the Seahawks at the start of the season.

Mehta doesn’t think Richardson will have a robust free agent market, considering his production this season, which means it may not take all that big of a financial commitment for the Jets to lure him back to New York.

It’s worth mentioning that the Jets are also expected to move on from DL Muhammad Wilkerson, who has been a major disappointment since they signed him to a long-term extension, so they will need some defensive line help.

Richardson, 27, is a former first-round pick of the Jets back in 2013. He played out his the final year of his four-year, $10.054 million rookie contract but the Jets elected to pick up his fifth-year option last year, which means he’s under team control through the 2017 season and will make a bases salary of $8.069 million.

The Jets traded Richardson to the Seahawks for WR Jermaine Kearse and 2018 second-round pick. The two teams also swapped 2018 7th-round picks as part of the deal.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Richardson would free up $8,069,000 of available cap space while creating no dead money.

In 2017, In 2016, Richardson appeared in 13 games for the Seahawks and recorded 37 tackles, one sack, an interception, a forced fumble, and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 24 interior defender out of 121 qualifying players.

We have him featured in our Top 25 – 2018 NFL Free Agents list.
