Jets Interested In Retaining LT Ryan Clady “At The Right Price”

Jason La Canfora reports that the Jets are still interested in keeping LT Ryan Clady at the right price, but are unlikely to bring him back at the $10 million he’s owed for the 2017 season.

  • La Canfora adds that Clady could return to New York if he’s willing to agree to a new deal.

A few weeks ago, Field Yates of ESPN reported that the Jets bought themselves some time to determine the future of LT Clady by reworking his contract back in December.

According to Yates, Clady was scheduled to have a $2.5 million roster bonus due in mid-February. The restructured deal eliminated this roster bonus and instead added the $2.5 million to his 2017 base salary to go along with another $1 million in incentives.

Yates mentions that now of this money is guaranteed until Week 1, as Clady is a vested veteran and his salary would automatically become guaranteed if he was on a team’s 53-man roster to open the year.

The expectation has been that Clady is likely to be a cap casualty. However, it sounds like there’s still a chance he could return for the 2017 season, depending on whether they can figure out reasonable compensation.

Clady, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Broncos back in 2008. After eight years in Denver, Clady was traded to the Jets for a 2016 fifth-round pick that became Leshaun Sims.

In 2016, Clady appeared in nine games for the Jets before he was placed on injured reserve with a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder. Pro Football Focus has him rated the No. 62 tackle out of 78 qualifying players.
