Jets & Josh McCown Have Discussed Parameters Of Deal, NY Has No Interest In Colin Kaepernick

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY reports that there’s serious enough interest between the Jets and veteran QB Josh McCown that the two sides have begun discussing the parameters of a potential agreement.

Vacchiano adds that this appears to leave McCown in position to be the leader in regards to the Jets’ quarterback position, as of now. Although, sources tell Vacchiano that New York is also interested in free agent QB Jay Cutler, but they’ve yet to meet with him, despite interest in bringing him in for a visit.

As for Colin Kaepernick, a team source tells Vacchiano that the Jets have “no interest” in him and his overall market appears to be “extremely thin.”

Other potential options for the Jets include Robert Griffin III, and potential trades for A.J. McCarron and Trevor Siemian.

If the Jets do end up signing McCown, he would be another bridge quarterback for them. However, the expectation is that they will at least give Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg an opportunity to compete for the starting job this summer. There’s also the possibility that the Jets draft yet another quarterback in the early rounds.

McCown, 37, is a former third-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2002. He’s played for several teams over the course of his career including the Lions, Raiders, Dolphins, Panthers, 49ers, Bears, Buccaneers and most recently for the Browns.

McCown was entering the final year of his three-year, $14 million contract when the Browns released him in a move that freed up $4,375,000 in available cap space while creating $666,668 in dead money.

In 2016, McCown threw for 1100 yards while completing 54.5 percent of his passes to go along with six touchdowns and six interceptions over the course of five games.
