Report: Jets Owner Prefers Greg McElroy Over Mark Sanchez

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports Jets owner Woody Johnson prefers Greg McElroy over Mark Sanchez for this weekend’s matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Mehta adds that GM Mike Tannenbaum and OC Tony Sparano are both in favor of keeping Sanchez under center, so it looks like Rex Ryan will ultimately be the one to decide who the start will be this weekend.

McElroy put together a single drive that resulted in a touchdown and subsequently won the game, but it’s hard to imagine him being all that productive moving forward. Still, Sanchez has done everything in his power to be benched, so it probably doesn’t matter who’s starting for them at this point.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Jets head coach Rex Ryan is “leaning” towards starting Greg McElroy over Mark Sanchez for their Week 14 matchup against the Jaguars.

One of La Canfora’s sources mentioned that Jets’ thinking is currently “65-35” in favor of McElroy. The Jets reportedly liked the “improved pace and verve” that the team’s offense showed while McElroy was under center.

La Canfora adds that the Jets do not consider Tim Tebow a starting quarterback and he is not in consideration for the team’s starting quarterback position.

It will be interesting to see what the Jets elect to do during the offseason in regards to the quarterback position and Sanchez’s contract. He’s in line to make $8.25 million in guarantees next season, so it’s safe to assume that he’ll be back.

  1. Good luck Greg. You have a tough road ahead of you trying to win with this group of babies that TannenBUM and Rex assembled . If they played half as well as they talked the Jets would be a dynasty. Rex , look at the team that shares your stadium THATS HOW IT IS DONE!!!!!!!!!!! Rex believed his early success had something to do with his coaching. He then let good players walk thinking it was more about him than the talent . BIG MISTAKE Rex !!!!!!!!!!! Now we are in rebuilding mode for the next four or five years. Let’s go after Cowher. Not Vick or Smith. We need a coach.
