Jets Made A “Serious Offer” To Titans & Were Reportedly Close To Trading For No. 1 Pick

Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net, citing sources close to the situation, reports that the Jets made a “serious offer” to the Titans for the No. 1 overall pick and were “close to getting the deal done.

  • According to Pauline, the trade was believed to include DL Muhammad Wilkerson.
  • Pauline expects the Jets to continue to explore potential trades up the board, but this will likely come down to the what the Rams elect to do at the start of the draft.

Tennessee walked away with a massive haul for the top pick, which includes two first-rounders, two second-rounders and two third-round selections. However, the 2017 third-round pick has conditions attached to it.

Either way, the Jets are clearly in the market for a young quarterback and have met with some of this year’s prospects including Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Christian Hackenberg, Paxton Lynch, Dak Prescott, and Jake Rudock.

Wilkerson is clearly available for trade if someone is willing to part with a first-round pick to get him. The problem is that any team willing to trade for Wilkerson will also need to sign him to a massive extension, and would have to get a deal in place before a trade is done as to prevent more leverage from shifting to Wilkerson in contract negotiations.

We’ll have more regarding a potential draft trades involving the Jets as the news is available.
