Jets Maintaining “Regular Contact” With QB Prospects

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the Jets are maintaining “regular contact” with quarterback prospects who could be drafted in round one.

  • Rapoport adds that the Jets could have “serious” interest at No. 18 overall, depending on whether someone falls to them.

The only quarterbacks that have met with the Jets and are even remotely in the discussion to come off the board in round one are Jimmy Garoppolo (Eastern Illinois) and Tom Savage (Pittsburgh).

  • Logan Thomas (Virginia Tech) and Tahj Boyd (Clemson) have also met with the Jets.

Reports from earlier in the day mentioned that there isn’t any teams willing to say that they have a first-round grade on UCF QB Blake Bortles, so there is at least a chance that could fall into the latter portion of round one.

Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater is another guy who is in the discussion to be drafted towards the end of the first round.

While the Jets may be keeping tabs on quarterback prospects, it seems unlikely that they would use a first-round pick on a position that doesn’t fit one of their many needs. New York is actually in a great position to land a receiver or cornerback and possibly even someone like TE Eric Erbon.

The Jets signed veteran QB Michael Vick to a contract this offseason and it appears as though he’ll be backing up Geno Smith this year.

It seems more likely that they would wait until after 2014 to reassess the quarterback position and Smith before deciding to add another quarterback.
