Jets & Muhammed Wilkerson “Nowhere Close” To An Agreement On An Extension

Jason La Canfora reports that the Jets and DL Muhammed Wilkerson are “nowhere close” to an agreement on a long-term extension.

However, the Jets reportedly do not value him as much as the Bills valued DT Marcell Dareus, who just secured a massive extension worth over $100 million.

La Canfora doesn’t expect the two parties to continue working on an extension during the season.

Beyond that, La Canfora considers it unlikely that the Jets and Wilkerson will continue talks after the season, and instead suggests that the Jets could either franchise him, trade him or just take a compensatory pick after he signs with another team.

  • Rich Cimini reported earlier in the day that the current sense in league circles is that the Jets are unlikely to have a deal in place with Wilkerson by the start of the season.
  • Joey Corry points out that the new six-year, $100 million extension signed by Bills DT Marcell Dareus will only complicate matters even further.

There has been talk that Jets could be more likely to focus to a contract extension for Wilkerson after DE Sheldon Richardson‘s received a four-game suspension from the NFL.

Wilkerson, 25, is already among the best defensive linemen in the NFL and has clearly earned for a big raise after the contracts signed by marquee players in recent months.

The Jets will still have their franchise tag at their disposal in 2016, which would run them around $16 million.

In 2014, Wilkerson appeared in 13 games and recorded 56 tackles, six sacks, one forced fumble and and five pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 3 defensive end in a 3-4 system.

We’ll have more regarding the Jets and Wilkerson as the news is available.
