Jets Name Josh McCown Starting Quarterback

Jets HC Todd Bowles officially named Josh McCown the team’s starting quarterback for the 2017 season on Monday.

Bowles added that they’ve yet to decide who will be their No. 2 quarterback behind McCown between Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty.

The expectation all along was that McCown was going to open the year as the team’s starter, so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

McCown, 38, is a former third-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2002. He’s played for several teams over the course of his career including the Lions, Raiders, Dolphins, Panthers, 49ers, Bears, Buccaneers and most recently for the Browns.

McCown was entering the final year of his three-year, $14 million contract when the Browns released him in a move that freed up $4,375,000 in available cap space while creating $666,668 in dead money.

The Jets signed McCown to a one-year, $6-million contract that includes another $7 million available in playtime and team-based incentives.

In 2016, McCown threw for 1100 yards while completing 54.5 percent of his passes to go along with six touchdowns and six interceptions over the course of five games.
