Jets OC Chan Gailey: Geno Smith Will “Probably” Start Week 1

New Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey told reporters on Wednesday that the starting quarterback job is Geno Smith‘s to lose, per Brian Costello.

  • Gailey mentioned that it was “never a thought” to have a Smith-Fitzpatrick competition in training camp, per Rich Cimini.
  • Gailey added that he doesn’t anticipate any competition for the job “because Geno’s the starter.
  • According to Gailey, unless Smith suffers an injury, he’ll “probably” will be the Jets’ Week 1 starter, per Rich Cimini.

This is certainly interesting to hear given that the Jets traded for Ryan Fitzpatrick earlier in the offseason and then used a fourth-round pick on Bryce Petty.

Many assumed that Fitzpatrick could be the guy to watch for the Jets, seeing as Smith has really struggled since entering the league a few years ago and Fitzpatrick put together some of his best seasons under Gailey while in Buffalo.

It’s worth mentioning that things can change during the summer and training camp. After all, Smith will need to learn a new system, but it appears as though the plan for now is to see what he can do in year.
