Jets OLB Lorenzo Mauldin Likely Out For Season

Brian Costello reports that Jets OLB Lorenzo Mauldin will likely require season-ending surgery for a back injury that to him being placed on injured reserve.

According to Costello, Mauldin plans to get a second opinion but it looks unlikely that he’ll return this year.

Mauldin, 24, is a former third-round pick of the Jets back in 2015. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $3,008,016 contract and stands to make a base salary of $633,000 for the 2017 season.

Mauldin was arrested this summer for misdemeanor assault for an alleged attack that occurred at New York nightclub back in April. Mauldin is alleged to have punched a man in the face during an altercation a few months ago after the man spilled champagne on Mauldin.

The victim is also suing Mauldin as part of an additional criminal case after he suffered several broken bones in his face.

In 2016, Mauldin appeared in 11 games for the Jets and recorded 16 tackles, 2.5 sacks, an interception and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 82 edge defender out of 109 qualifying players.
