Jets WR Eric Decker Undergoes Hip Surgery, Also Needs Shoulder Surgery

Update:

The New York Jets announced Tuesday that WR Eric Decker underwent hip surgery that is expected to require six months of rehab.

However, Decker will have shoulder surgery when he’s off crutches, which means he’s looking at eight months of recovery time for this procedure.

The Jets previously placed Decker on injured reserve, due to a rotator cuff tear but it was determined that he also needed hip surgery.

Adam Schefter and Field Yates are reporting that the Jets are planning to place WR Eric Decker on injured reserve.

  • Ian Rapoport confirms the news and adds that Decker has a “significant” rotator cuff tear.
  • According to Rapoport, the expectation is that Decker will undergo season-ending surgery after he was unable to play through the issue.

This doesn’t come as a complete surprise, considering that Schefter previously reported that Decker’s partially torn rotator cuff was worrisome enough that injured reserve was a possibility.

Decker admitted that even if he was to return at some point, he wasn’t going to be 100 percent this year.

“I don’t expect myself to be 100 percent at some point,” Decker said, via the New York Daily News. “It’s just getting to where it’s manageable and I can still play the same game that I need to.”

Decker, 29, is a former third-round pick of the Broncos back in 2010. He spent four years in Denver before signing a five-year, $36.25 million contract with the Jets back in 2014. He stands to make a base salary of $6.5 million for the 2016 season.

This season, Decker has appeared in three games and caught nine passes for 194 yards receiving and two touchdowns for the Jets.
