Jets QB Job Geno Smith’s To Lose?

Brian Costello of the New York Post reports that the Jets are “smitten” with second-round QB Geno Smith.

Costello mentions that it’s “beginning to look more and more like the starting job is his to lose.” Smith was reportedly “impressive” during the two days of mini-camp that was open to the media.

Costello admits that it’s too earlier to completely rule out Mark Sanchez winning the job, but the “sense around the Jets that they want Smith to win this thing.” In fact, Costello believes they may end up going with David Garrard if Geno still needs some time.

Costello adds that the only way Sanchez is on their roster at the start of the season is if Garrard gets injured and Smith is struggling to pick up the team’s offense. If the Jets were looking to trade Sanchez to a quarterback needy team then they’ll almost certainly have to eat a large portion of his $8.75 million base salary.
