Mark Sanchez Likely To Undergo Surgery On Shoulder, Career With The Jets Likely Over

Update:

Rich Cimini of ESPN New York writes that Mark Sanchez’s career with the Jets is “effectively over.”

Cimini adds that Sanchez is certain to be released following the season and even if he elects to rehab his shoulder, he’s still a candidate to be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Sanchez has three years remaining on his contract, but there’s no way he’ll see any of that money. The Jets can reduce his 2014 cap figure from $13.1 million to $8.3 million by releasing him, which would also prevent them from paying his $2 million roster bonus.

It will be interesting to see where he lands after the Jets cut him loose.

Mark Sanchez sent the following text message to Chris Mortensen.

“If I needed surgery right now, I never would have left Andrews’ office. I would’ve stayed and got the surgery.”

Sanchez was asked if he was unlikely to undergo surgery, but he didn’t offer a response to the question. We’ll have more as the news is available.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Dr. James Andrews confirmed that Jets QB Mark Sanchez does in fact have a labral tear in his right shoulder.

  • Mortensen adds that Sanchez is likely to have surgery on his injured shoulder in the coming weeks.

The Jets have said publicly that they have no plans to place Sanchez on season-ending injured reserve, but this kind of injury would most likely end his 2013 season. Sanchez still has the option to rehab his shoulder instead of undergoing surgery, but Mortensen adds that he could still end up on IR either way.

New York currently has Matt Simms and Brady Quinn behind rookie Geno Smith.
