Jets Re-Signing DT Mike Pennel To One-Year Deal

Manish Mehta is reporting that the Jets are re-signing DT Mike Pennel to a one-year deal.

Pennel has had some off-the-field issues that led to him being suspended last year. Pennel did, however, settle his appeal/lawsuit over a substance-abuse violation and served a four-game suspension this past season.

His suspension stemmed from further discipline he was facing under substance abuse policy. Pennel had an appeal date scheduled for December 6 but he requested that the court assigned a new arbitrator after contending that there was a conflict of interest involving arbitrator James Carter.

Pennel previously served a four-game suspension at the start of this season for a substance abuse violation.

Pennel, 25, wound up signing on with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State-Pueblo back in 2014. He was waived towards the end of last year and was later claimed off of waivers by the Jet.s

However, the Jets declined to tender Pennel a contract, making him an unrestricted free agent.

In 2016, Pennel appeared in eight games and recorded seven tackles and no sacks for the Packers. He also contributed one pass defense.
