Jets Reached Out To Redskins About Kirk Cousins’ Availability After Geno Smith Broke His Jaw

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Jets reached out to the Redskins shortly after Geno Smith had his jaw broken by a teammate in a locker room incident.

The Jets were reportedly inquiring about then backup QB Kirk Cousins‘ availability, according to Rapoport.

Rapoport adds that the Jets were just doing their due diligence and made plenty of other calls to teams. However, the Redskins weren’t willing to even discuss trading Cousins with them.

Cousins has been a popular name mentioned in trade scenarios since he was drafted a few years ago, but it was clear that Washington’s coaching staff was pretty high on him, which explains their decision to bench Robert Griffin III and move forward with Cousins as their starter.

Cousins, 27, is entering the final year of his four-year, $2,572,688 rookie contract that included a $472,688 signing bonus. He stands to make a base salary of $660,000 for the 2015 season.

In 2014, Cousins appeared in six games for the Redskins and threw for 1,710 yards while completing 61.8 percent of his passes to go along with 10 touchdownd and nine interceptions.
