Jets Release CB Antonio Cromartie

Update:

Ian Rapoport reports that the Jets are in fact releasing veteran CB Antonio Cromartie.

  • Mike Garafolo reports that the Jets and Cromartie made an attempt to come to an agreement regarding a pay cut, but were unable to make it work.
  • Manish Mehta reports that the Jets could still try to bring Cromartie back at a lower price, but his sources have mentioned that they are targeting another cornerback in free agency.

Cromartie, soon to be 30, was entering the final year of his contract, and had a staggering cap figure of $14.98 for the 2014 season. On top of that, Cromartie has a $5 million roster bonus due in March.

Releasing Cromartie will free up $9.5 million in available cap space, according to OverTheCap.com.

Jets CB Antonio Cromartie appears to be implying that the team has released him by the recent tweets posted on his Twitter account.

Cromartie’s name has come up numerous times in the past few months as a possible cap casualty.

Last year, he totaled 38 tackles, three interceptions and a forced fumble. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 103 cornerback in the league last year.
