Jets Making Calls About Available Quarterbacks

Update:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that if the Jets do, in fact, look to add a quarterback by trade or a free agent signing, it won’t be former Texans QB Ryan Mallett

Instead, Schefter expects them to explore other available options.

Jason La Canfora mentions that Josh Johnson could make sense for them, as the Bills won’t need him much longer once Tyrod Taylor is back, and he was previously with the Bills earlier in the season.

Mike Florio mentioned on Sunday Night Football that former Texans QB Ryan Mallett could be an option for the Jets, who are reportedly making calls about available quarterbacks either for trade or to be signed.

Following the game, Jets HC Todd Bowles told reporters  that Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered torn ligaments in thumb while backup QB Geno Smith injured his left shoulder and abdomen.

Mallett was released by the Texans earlier in the week after he missed the team’s charter to Miami for their Week 7 game. There are obvious concerns about his commitment to the game, but there aren’t very many options at quarterback at this point in the year.

Mallett, 27, has appeared in six games and thrown for 770 yards while completing 53.1 percent of his passes to go along with three touchdowns and four interceptions.

Pro Football Talk reports that Jets are already making calls around the league regarding potential quarterbacks that are available to sign or traded.

Jets starter Ryan Fitzpatrick left Sunday’s game against the Raiders with a left hand injury, and has been replaced by Geno Smith.

Doug Moore reports that Fitzpatrick is dealing with a sprained thumb and is unlikely to return to the game. According to Moore, Fitzpatrick is unable to grip football right.

It’s hard to say how long Fitzpatrick could be out right now, but at the very least, the Jets aren’t comfortable with Smith being their starter moving forward.

There’s a limited window to negotiate potential trades, as the deadline is coming up on Tuesday, but it can’t hurt to make some calls to see who’s available.

It’s worth mentioning that the Jets signed Matt Flynn to a contract earlier in the year before releasing him at the start of the season, so he could be on their radar if there are no trades to be made.

We’ll have more regarding the Jets adding a quarterback as the news is available.
