Jets Have Reportedly Received “Soft” Trade Interest In Geno Smith

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets have received “soft” interest from NFL teams in backup QB Geno Smith.

According to Mehta, the Jets have fielded trade inquiries from teams with interest in several positions, including quarterback.

In regards to Smith, Mehta writes that he is actually viewed in a “much more favorable light around the league” than he is by Jets’ fans.

Mehta also mentions that it’s safe to conclude that teams are inquiring about Smith, and possibly to a lesser degree, Bryce Petty, as they will need to sort out their quarterbacks in the coming days.

If the Jets received a fourth-round pick for Smith, Mehta believes Jets GM Mike Maccagnan “would be a fool not to make the deal.” However, if he can only get a conditional sixth- or seventh-rounder it wouldn’t make much sense for them.

It’s clear that Ryan Fitzpatrick and second-round pick Christian Hackenberg will be on their 53-man roster, but carrying four quarterbacks would be a strange move for the Jets.

Smith, 25, is a former second-round pick of the Jets back in 2013. He’s in the final year of his four-year, $5.019 million rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $675,000 for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Smith appeared in a single game for the Jets and completed 27 of 42 pass attempts (64.3%) for 265 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
