Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Jets bought themselves some time to determine the future of LT Ryan Clady by reworking his contract back in December.
According to Yates, Clady was scheduled to have a $2.5 million roster bonus due in mid-February. The restructured deal eliminated this roster bonus and instead added the $2.5 million to his 2017 base salary to go along with another $1 million in incentives.
Yates mentions that now of this money is guaranteed until Week 1, as Clady is a vested veteran and his salary would automatically become guaranteed if he was on a team’s 53-man roster to open the year.
The expectation has been that Clady is likely to be a cap casualty. However, this move at least gives him an opportunity at returning next year, even though the Jets will probably be on the lookout for a left tackle this offseason.
Clady, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Broncos back in 2008. After eight years in Denver, Clady was traded to the Jets for a 2016 fifth-round pick that became Leshaun Sims.
In 2016, Clady appeared in nine games for the Jets before he was placed on injured reserve with a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder.
