Jets Sign QB Michael Vick, Release QB Mark Sanchez

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Jets have signed former Eagles QB Michael Vick to a one-year contract worth $5 million.

In a corresponding move the Jets announce that they have also released QB Mark Sanchez.

Michael Vick

Vick, 33, was relegated to a backup position with the Eagles last season after QB Nick Foles emerged as a competent quarterback in head coach Chip Kelly’s offense.

All offseason the Jets have been linked to Vick due to the inconsistent play of QB Geno Smith during his first season. With Vick on the roster, the Jets now have legitimate quarterback competition for Smith entering his second season.

Mark Sanchez

Sanchez, 27, did not play at all last season after suffering a season-ending injury during the preseason which led to Smith acquiring the Jets starting job.

With Sanchez’s released the team cleared $8.3 in cap space and do not have to pay his $2 million roster bonus. Sanchez now sits atop of a weak free agent quarterback market with speculative options including the Jaguars, and Browns.
