Jets Have Three-Year Offer On Table For Ryan Fitzpatrick, Would Pay Him $12M In Year One

Update:

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a league source, reports that the problem with the Jets’ three-year offer isn’t the reported $12 million in compensation for the first year, but the pay in the final two years of the deal.

Florio mentions that it’s curious the Jets are only willing to leak the $12 million figure in year one without also providing details for the final two years.

This appears to be the Jets trying to apply public pressure to Fitzpatrick to reconsider their standing offer him to him. However, it’s likely going to take some movement from both parties in order for an agreement to be in place in the coming months.

Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post reports that the Jets have a three-year offer on the table for free agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick that would pay him $12 million in the first year of the contract.

Sources have told Cannizzaro that the offer has actually been on the table for months, which is interesting, considering that previous reports have said that the Jets were low-balling Fitzpatrick with an $8 million per year contract.

Ian Rapoport confirms the report and adds that the offer has been on the table since March.

While the Jets may be offering $12 million in year one of the agreement, it’s possible that they could be looking for a much lower salary in the final two years of the agreement. If that’s the case, the average salary could be closer an $8 million per year average salary. However, that’s just speculation on my part.

Fitzpatrick mentioned earlier in the week that he’s still hoping to be back with the Jets in 2016, and is working out in the time being.

I had a great time with the guys last year and I want to continue doing this,” Fitzpatrick said, via Pro Football Talk. “I’m still preparing for the season. It’s been a process and the good thing about it is the discussions have been behind closed doors.

When asked about the possibility of retiring, Fitzpatrick said: “I’m playing football next year.

Fitzpatrick, 32, played out the final year of his two-year, $7.5 million contract that included $4 million guaranteed and is currently the best quarterback still available in this year’s market.

In 2015, Fitzpatrick threw for 3,905 yards while completing 59.6 percent of his passes to go along with 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has Fitzpatrick rated as the No. 27 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.
