Jets Unlikely To Re-Sign S Ed Reed?

Rich Cimini of ESPN.com takes a look at the Jets safety position as they prepare for free agency.

According to Cimini, the Jets would be wise to start investing in this position versus “trying to get by on the cheap.”

With that in mind, Cimini doesn’t see veteran S Ed Reed being anything more than a backup plan for the Jets. Instead, Cimini mentions that if the Bills allow S Jairus Byrd to test the open market, they should be “all over him.”

Reed, 35, will be an unrestricted free agent for the second time in as many years. He has said that he would like to play another two years even though he has hinted at retirement in the past.

Reed signed a three-year, $14.875 million contract with the Texans last year, but only lasted until November before the Texans decided to cut him loose. At the time, the Jets were in need of help at safety and Reed was surprisingly able to step in produce three interceptions in the team’s final four games.

It’s hard to imagine him finding a lot of interest or securing anything more than the veteran’s minimum at this point in time.
