Jets Using More “46 Defensive Fronts” In 2012

New York Jets defensive line coach Karl Dunbar mentioned that he plans use more “46 fronts” this season.

“We’re going to play a lot of that 46 defense,” Dunbar said, via the Newark Star-Ledger. “You get in that 46 defense, you’re going to get a lot of one-on-one blocks, and when we put athletic guys on the field, bad things happen for the offense.

The 4-6 defensive front was created by Rex Ryan’s father Buddy and became the basis for arguably the greatest defense in NFL history, the Chicago Bears 1985 unit. The Jets will most likely us it for obvious run situations, but Rex will likely use it as a decoy of sorts, to create mismatches in terms of blitzes.
