Jets Will Interview Jerry Angelo & Omar Khan For GM Job On Thursday

The New York Jets have shifted gears in their search for their next general manager now that multiple candidates have turned down the job.

Manish Mehta reports that the Jets will bring in former Bears GM Jerry Angelo on Thursday for an interview. Mehta also reports that Steelers chief contract negotiator Omar Khan will also meet with the Jets on Thursday regarding the position.

Angelo spent 11 seasons as the Bears GM, but he was widely criticized for his moves in free agency and the draft. With that being said, few people are as respected around the league as Angelo, so it makes sense that they would at least consider him for the job now that they’ve missed out on a few options.

Khan, on the other hand, has worked with Steelers salary cap for a number of years and is reportedly very close with Bill Cowher. The Jets have already specified that whoever they bring in as the next GM will have to be willing to keep Rex Ryan in place as their GM for the 2013. After that, Ryan could be replaced and there’s reason to think Cowher would consider taking the Jets job.

Dolphins assistant GM Brian Gaine, Chargers director of player personnel Jimmy Raye, Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross and 49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble are also being considered for the job.

This is pure speculation, but it’s at least an interesting idea to consider.
